Fact 51

The Sea of Galilee is misidentified in the Book of Mormon as the Red Sea.

~2 Nephi 19:1; cf. Isaiah 9:1; Matthew 4:12-13. See Vogel, Mormonism Unvailed, footnote 9, page 84~

Fact 52

The LDS church goes to great lengths to suppress any history that is not faith promoting. They have even modified their official history to make it less troubling, and they discourage members from reading material they deem inappropriate.

Because of these politics, most church members are taught a very simplified, sanitized, and inaccurate version of history.

Fact 53

Because of the tight-knit ideology of the Mormon Church, there is a tendency to quickly invalidate the evidence presented by those outside of the faith. Yet, no evidence should be dismissed entirely on the bias of its origin. There can be reasonable suspicion, but it cannot be discarded based on the fact that the source is an enemy.

Fact 54

“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”

~King James Bible, Luke 14:26~

Fact 55

Mormons believe the words of the living general authorities are continued revelation and trump not only the words of past Mormon authorities, but also the official canon.

Given this ambiguous set of guidelines in literature it is impossible to predict what is actually approved by the church.

Fact 56

There is a particular smugness among Utah Mormons, leading many to think they are part of a privileged society of God’s chosen people.

Fact 57

No official signed document of the “Testimony of Three Witnesses” has ever been found, nor has its existence ever been mentioned.

Fact 58

During his first visit to obtain the golden plates:

“[Joseph] again opened the box, and in it he saw the book, and attempted to take it out, but was hindered. He saw in the box something like a toad, which soon assumed the appearance of a man, and struck him on the side of his head. – Not being discouraged at trifles, he again stooped down and strove to take the book, when the spirit struck him again, and knocked him three or four rods, and hurt him prodigiously.”

~Willard Chase, ca. 11 December 1833, in Howe, Mormonism Unvailed, page 242~

Fact 59

LDS apostle George Q. Cannon states:

“The Journal of Discourses deservedly ranks as one of the standard works of the Church.”

(Journal of Discourses 8:iii, “Preface”)

Yet even the church admits the 26-volume digest has some significant mistakes, still, they are reticent to discuss which portions are actually wrong; giving the student of Mormonism doubt about its reliability as a whole.

Fact 60

“[T]he descendants of Cain [African Americans] cannot cast off their skin of blackness, at once, and immediately, although every soul of them should repent…Cain and his posterity must wear the mark which God put upon them; and his white friends may wash the race of Cain with fuller’s soap every day, they cannot wash away God’s mark.”

~John Taylor, Millennial Star 14:418~

Fact 61

The history depicted by the LDS church has been so sanitized, suppressed, and changed, that it is mostly fiction. It is difficult to get an accurate historical picture from LDS sources.

It is therefore ridiculous to state that the only credible information is the modern, official LDS Church version(s) of the past.

Fact 62

The LDS church in Utah wields its political power through elected officials, who are mostly Mormon.

Fact 63

As early as 1823, several years before he received the golden plates or knew anything about the specific contents, Joseph displayed his creative imagination. His mother explained:

“In the course of our evening conversations…Joseph would give us some of the most amusing recitals which could be imagined. He would describe the ancient inhabitants of this continent – their dress, their manner of traveling, the animals which they rode, the cities that were built by them, the structures of their buildings, with every particular of their mode of warfare, their religious worship as particularly as though he had spent his life with them.”

~Lucy Smith, Preliminary Manuscript, pages 43-44~

Fact 64

“We shall pull the wool over the eyes of the American people and make them swallow Mormonism, polygamy and all.”

~Brigham Young -12 July 1875, quoted in E.A. Folk, Story of Mormonism; see also Abanes, One Nation Under Gods, page 281~

Fact 65

Joseph Smith said:

“The world owes me a good living and if I cannot get it without, I’ll steal it and catch me at it if you can.”

~see Wilhelm Ritter von Wymental, Mormon Portraits; 1886~

Fact 66

“When our father Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives with him.”

~Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 1:50; emphasis added~

Fact 69

In LaMar Petersen’s book Problems in Mormon Text he tells us Joseph Smith said the angel’s name was Nephi; NOT Moroni.

In the first edition of The Pearl of Great Price, the angel is also identified as Nephi.

~See also Millennial Star 3:71~

Fact 70

Prior to the second coming of Christ, Mormons believe there will be a secret meeting of all of the great prophets of the past in Adam-ondi-Ahman (Missouri):

“Until his grand council is held, Satan shall hold rule in the nations of the earth; but at that time thrones are to be cast down and man’s rule shall come to an end…Preparation for this work is now going on…This council in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman is to be of the greatest importance to this world. At that time there will be a transfer of authority from the usurper and imposter, Lucifer, to the rightful King, Jesus Christ…When this gathering is held, the world will not know of it; the members of the Church at large will not know of it, yet it shall be preparatory to the coming in the clouds of glory of our Savior Jesus Christ as the Prophet Joseph Smith has said. The world cannot know of it. The Saints cannot know of it – except those who officially shall be called into this council – for it shall precede the coming of Jesus Christ as a thief in the night, unbeknown to all the world.”

~Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to Perfection, pages 290-291~

Fact 71

“Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.”

~King James Bible, Luke 12:51-53~

Fact 72

“When all the other children of Adam have had the privilege of receiving the priesthood and of coming into the Kingdom of God and of being redeemed from the four quarters of the earth, and have received their resurrection from the dead, then it will be time enough to remove the curse [black skin] from Cain and his posterity.”

~Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 2:142-143~

Fact 73

Oliver Cowdery wrote to his brother, Warren, stating that [Joseph] Smith had inappropriately spent time alone with [Fanny] Alger, referring to it as a “dirty, nasty, filthy affair.”

(Oliver Cowdery, Letter dated 21 January 1838)

Fact 74

Book of Mormon, Mosiah 16:7:

“And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.”

This verse is purported to have been written about 148 B.C., yet it is delivered in the past tense.

~See King James Bible, Isaiah 25:8 and 1 Corinthians 15:54-55; Ref: see Howe, Mormonism Unvailed~

Fact 75

Church members are increasingly choosing obedience over agency.

In Mormon theology, this was Lucifer’s plan from the beginning.

Fact 77

“I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they were true characters, and that the translation of such of them as had been translated was also correct. I took the certificate and put it into my pocket…”

~Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith – History 1:64~

Professor Anthon replied:

“The whole story about my having pronouncd the Mormonite inscription to be ‘reformed Egyptian hieroglyphics’ is perfectly false…Upon examining the paper in question, I soon came to the conclusion that it was all a trick, perhaps a hoax…This paper was in fact a singular scrawl. It consisted of all kinds of crooked characters disposed in columns, and had evidently been prepared by some person who had before him at the time a book containing various alphabets. Greek and Hebrew letters, crosses and flourishes, Roman letters inverted or placed sideways, were arranged in perpendicular columns, and the whole ended in a rude delineation of a circle divided into various compartments, decked with various strange marks, and evidently copied after the Mexican Calendar given by Humboldt, but copied in such a way as not to betray the source whence it was derived. I am thus particular as to the contents of the paper, inasmuch as I have frequently conversed with my friends on the subject, since the Mormonite excitement began, and well remember that the paper contained anything else but ‘Egyptian Hieroglyphics.’”

~E.D. Howe, Mormonism Unvailed, pages 270-272, 1834~

Fact 78

“I do not believe that the people of the North have any more right to say that the South shall not hold slaves, than the South have to say the North shall…the first mention we have of slavery is found in the Holy Bible…And so far from that prediction being averse to the mind of God, it [slavery] remains as a lasting monument of the decree of Jehovah, to the shame and confusion of all who have cried out against the South, in consequence of their holding the sons of Ham [African Americans] in servitude.”

~Joseph Smith, JS History of the Church 2:438~

Fact 79

“You must not think, from what I say, that I am opposed to slavery. No! The negro is damned, and is to serve his master till God chooses to remove the curse of Ham.”

~Brigham Young, New York Herald – 4 May 1855~

Fact 80

“The moment we consent to mingle with the seed of Cain [African Americans] the Church must go to destruction, – we should receive the curse which has been placed upon the seed of Cain, and never more be numbered with the children of Adam who are heirs to the priesthood until that curse be removed.”

~Brigham Young, Brigham Young Addresses – 5 February 1852, LDS historical department~

Fact 81

“[I]n 1838 [Joseph Smith said]…parenthetically that ‘at this time it had never entered my heart that all [churches] were wrong,’ although in 1832 he said that as early as 1818 he had already concluded that all churches had ‘apostatized’ and that ‘there was no society or denomination that built upon the gospel of Jesus Christ.’”

~Dan Vogel, Joseph Smith: The Making of a Prophet, page 60; 2004~

Fact 82

“Cain slew his brother…and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race – that they should be the ‘servant of servants,’ and they will be, until that curse is removed; and the Abolitionists cannot help it, nor in the least alter that decree. How long is that race to endure the dreadful curse that is upon them? That curse will remain upon them, and they never can hold the Priesthood or share in it until all the other descendants of Adam have received the promises and enjoyed the blessings of the Priesthood and the keys thereof. Until the last ones of the residue of Adam’s children are brought up to that favorable position, the children of Cain cannot receive the first ordinances of the Priesthood. They were the first that were cursed, and they will be the last from whom the curse will be removed. When the residue of the family of Adam come up and receive their blessings, then the curse will be removed from the seed of Cain, and they will receive blessings in like proportion.”

~Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 7:290-291~

Fact 83

“Also, the gospel was not carried to this segregated black group…the Negroes tread the earth with black dishonorable bodies as a judgment of God because at the time of decision in the pre-existence they were faint-hearted and exhibited an infirmity of purpose – they were not valiant in the cause of the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, they were entitled to no better earthly lineage than that of the first early murderer, Cain. They were to be the ‘servant of servants.’ They were to be segregated. No effort was made to carry the gospel to them as a people.”

~Arthur M. Richardson, That Ye May Not Be Deceived, pages 9-10~

Fact 84

The 2013 on-line Church essay ‘Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo’ “concedes Smith’s marriage to 14-year-old Helen Mar Kimball, but refers to it as happening ‘Several months before her 15th birthday.’ Why the evasive wording? Are they embarrassed to simply say 14?”

~Salt Lake City Messenger 124:5, May 2015~

Fact 85

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“He helped make and organize the world. He is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days! About whom holy men have written and spoken – He is our Father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do.”

~Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 1:50~

Fact 86

“A good deal of conversion of a similar character took place, the prophet occupying neatly the whole time, and talking of himself incessantly. — Judging from his [Joseph Smith’s] conversation, manner, and appearance I should think him a man of small capacity, smaller acquirements, and a dupe to his own impostures. His language is rude and vulgar, and his conduct light and trifling. He is fond of his own jokes, and low wit, and laughs immoderately when he thinks he has said a good thing. He is a large, fleshy man, with a fine blue eye, large and sensual looking mouth and lips, with an evident predominance of the animal propensities…and frequently gets drunk and yet he is venerated as the favorite of Heaven, and his revelations are put on a par with divine writ.”

~New York Weekly Express, published on 29 Sep 1843; the interview took place 30 Aug 1843~

Fact 87

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“Father Adam’s oldest son (Jesus the Saviour) who is the heir of the family is Father Adam’s first begotten in the spirit world, who according to the flesh is the only begotten as it is written. In his divinity he having gone back into the spirit world, and come in the spirit to Mary and she conceived, for when Adam and Eve got through with their work in this earth, they did not lay their bodies down in the dust, but returned to the spirit world from whence they came.”

~Brigham Young via John Nuttall’s Journal; see also David John Buerger, The Mysteries of Godliness: A History of Mormon Temple Worship, pages 111-112~

Fact 88

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“Some have grumbled because I believe our God to be so near to us as Father Adam. There are many who know that doctrine to be true.”

~Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 5:331~

Fact 89

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“I tell you, when you see your Father in the Heavens, you will see Adam; when you see your Mother that bear your spirit, you will see Mother Eve.”

~Brigham Young, 8 October 1854; edited version appears in The Essential Brigham Young, pages 86-103. Signature Books, 1992~

Fact 90

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“How much unbelief exists in the minds of the Latter-day Saints in regard to one particular doctrine which I revealed to them, and which God revealed to me – namely that Adam is our father and God – I do not know, I do not inquire, I care nothing about it. Our Father Adam helped to make this earth, it was created expressly for him, and after it was made he and his companions came here. He brought one of his wives with him, and she was called Eve, because she was the first woman upon the earth. Our Father Adam is the man who stands at the gate and holds the keys of everlasting life and salvation to all his children who have or who ever will come upon the earth. I have been found fault with by the ministers of religion because I have said that they were ignorant. But I could not find any man on the earth who could tell me this, although it is one of the simplest things in the world, until I met and talked with Joseph Smith.”

~Brigham Young, Deseret News 22:308, 8 June 1873~

Fact 91

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“The Lord told me that Jesus Christ was the son of Adam.”

~Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Heber C. Kimball 20:17; see also Deseret News – 11 March 1857~

Fact 92

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“Some have said that I was very presumptuous to say that Brother Brigham was my God and Savior. Brother Joseph was his God. The one that gave Joseph the keys of the Kingdom was his God, which was Peter. Jesus Christ was his God and the God and Father of Jesus Christ was Adam.”

~Heber C. Kimball, quoted by Wilford Woodruff, in the Journal of Wilford Woodruff – 10 April 1852~

Fact 93

“There is a reason why one man is born black and with other disadvantages, while another is born white with great advantages. The reason is that we once had an estate before we came here, and were obedient, more or less, to the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things there received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful received less.”

~Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, page 61~

Fact 94

“It is not the authorities of the Church who have placed a restriction on him [black race] regarding the holding of the Priesthood. It was not the Prophet Joseph Smith…It was the Lord.”

~Joseph Fielding Smith, quoted in John J. Stewart’s The Glory of Mormonism, page 154; 1963~

Fact 95

“Negroes in this life are denied the priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty. The gospel message of salvation is not carried affirmatively to them…Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain spiritual blessings are concerned…”

~Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, page 477; 1958 edition~

Fact 96

“In fact we believe it to be a great sin in the eyes of our Heavenly Father for a white person to marry a black one. And further, that it is a proof of the mercy of God that no such race appear to be able to continue for many generations.”

~Juvenile Instructor 3:165~

Fact 97

“We will first inquire into the results of the approbation or displeasure of God upon a people, starting with the belief that a black skin is a mark of the curse of heaven placed upon some portions of mankind…We understand that when God made man in his own image and pronounced him very good, that he made him white.”

~Juvenile Instructor 3:157~

Fact 98

“Then Menahem smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not to him, therefore he smote it; and all the women therein that were with child he ripped up.”

~King James Bible, 2 Kings 15:16~

Fact 99

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“President Young followed & made many good remarks…He said that our God was Father Adam. He was the Father of the Savior Jesus Christ – Our God was no more or less than Adam…Michael the Archangel.”

~Wilford Woodruff, Journal of Wilford Woodruff – 19 February 1854~

Fact 100

Brigham Young era authorities vigorously preached that Adam was actually God the Father:

“At meeting of school of the prophets, President Young said Adam was Michael the Archangel and he was the father of Jesus Christ and was our God, and Joseph taught this principle.”

~Wilford Woodruff, Journal of Wilford Woodruff – 16 December 1867~
